The necessity to dominate other human beings is customarily born from
an individual's personal inadequacy: thc motive is to gain reassurance
through constant "proof" to oneself that one is not only not a second-
rate human being but, contrastingly, a more powerful and vibrant
personality than one's fellows. As in cases of rape, most of the
historical vampires mentioned above were expressing their power over
people who were utterly defenceless. The Countess de Bathory Tiberius
and Gilies de Rais had armies of servants to ensure that their unhappy
victims had no chance of escape. Ian Brady (b.1938)) and Myra Hindley
(b.1942), who used a tape-recorder to preserve the "psychic energy"
they desired from their victims.
